Abstract
Waratahs jersey circa 1909. It is almost certainly from 1908 British Isles tour to Australia and New Zealand. The British Isles tour of saw them play 26 matches in all. 3 of the 9 matches in Australia were played against the NSW Waratahs, 2 of which were won. Swansea forward Edgar Morgan played in all 3 of these encounters and it is possible he returned to Swansea with this jersey. The Australian Rugby Museum has dated the jersey as circa 1908-09 from the Waratah flower design. The first Australian rugby tourists to Britain in 1908 wore a similar jersey but with 'Australia' beneath the Waratah emblem. These are the colours that the Australian team wore when they were defeated by Swansea on Boxing Day 1908 at St Helen’s.
